L'Etoile Guest House, created and run by Philippe Papadimitriou, is, let's say it upfront, a rare place that can only delight hikers and guests seeking coolness to escape the heatwave. It offers uniqueness, well-being, nature, and a holiday atmosphere reminiscent of the 1920s. Having first come by chance upon returning from a crossing of Lozère ten years ago, I return there every year for pleasure and almost out of tradition for a week's stay. Very easily accessible by train, the La Bastide Saint-Laurent-les-Bains station serves all stops up to Nîmes or Clermont-Ferrand several times a day.
Staying at L'Etoile is to find an atmosphere worthy of the stories of Robert Louis Stevenson or an Agatha Christie novel. The communal dining table, by the fireside in a vast, bright room, is cheerful, very well-stocked, and varied. The ice is quickly broken, thanks to the boisterous humor of "Philippe," host and cook. Generations mingle; people talk, laugh, and remake the world. The cuisine reflects the generous and straightforward personality of the owner. You enjoy good fresh produce there. The management of the place is sound: every euro earned is reinvested in improvements.
Thus, in a few years, Philippe Papadimitriou, originally from Belgium, has succeeded in restoring a beautiful building from the 1920s (1926). The sober, coherent decoration elegantly features black and white. The floors are beautiful light wood. The spaces are vast, bright, and clean. The nicely arranged garden overlooks the Allier River, which cools it. Lovers of authenticity, don't miss this experience!
